Overview

Rising above Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak and the fifth tallest in Africa. Often chosen as a warm-up climb before Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a more technical and rewarding ascent. Over three days, trekkers pass through diverse landscapes alive with wildlife giraffes, buffalos, antelopes, and baboons making every step a true wilderness experience. ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet your driver-guide for transfer to Arusha. Along the way, enjoy introductions to Tanzania's culture and scenery. If time allows, take a short city tour before settling into your hotel.

ACCOMMODATION: GOLD CREST HOTEL, ARUSHA

DAY 2: ARUSHA – NGONGONGARE GATE – TREK TO MIRIAKAMBA HUT

Depart Arusha and register at Ngongongare Gate before beginning your trek. The trail winds through lush fig forests and offers chances to spot wildlife such as monkeys and antelopes. A picnic lunch is enjoyed en route, with a highlight stop at Moiyo Waterfall.

Arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514m) in the late afternoon after about 5 hours of trekking. Dinner and overnight in the peaceful mountain setting.

ACCOMMODATION: MIRIAKAMBA HUT

 

DAY 3: MIRIAKAMBA HUT – SADDLE HUT

Begin a steady climb toward Saddle Point, taking about 4 hours. After lunch and rest, you may opt for a side trek to Little Meru (3,820m), which offers panoramic views and helps with acclimatization.

Return to Saddle Hut (3,566m) for dinner and overnight, surrounded by crisp mountain air.

DAY 4: SUMMIT MERU PEAK – DESCENT TO ARUSHA

Start your summit attempt just after midnight, trekking via Rhino Point toward Meru Peak (4,562m). The challenging ascent rewards climbers with breathtaking sunrise views over Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue down to Mommella Headquarters, covering about 28 km in total. Your driver will transfer you back to Arusha for a well-earned rest.
